Claire and I decided that the best use of our graduation money would be to spend it on gas and car repairs. So, on June 21, we set out from Northfield with 10 gallons of water in the trunk, and a box full of snacks, courtesy of Bill Titus in the Physics Department. Go Bill! Also along for the ride was Paolo the Penguin. Having spent his entire lifetime decorating various social functions on the Carleton Campus, he was anxious to get away from it all. That, and Joe had left him to rot on our porch.
We stopped in Blue Earth, MN to get gas. And what should we see but the Jolly Green Giant!
We didn't go inside.
Claire got a lighter, which she later gave away to someone we met on the trip. Honestly, I forget who.
We stopped again for gas in South Dakota. We didn't see the puppy.
The first day was really eventful. South Dakota makes up for boring scenery by advertising Wall Drug every three miles.
