"The electrician" who climbed flagpoles with two hands, who had found and was excited to share his very personal relationship with a God, and who argued that Michael Jackson was a black American to be idolized, accompanied us on our walk to overlook the Nana-Keneiba. As we rested and listened to the villagers recount the history of this enclave used as a meeting place for elders, his fingers carefully traced out the ancient symbols and meanings on this rock face.
On New Year's Eve, as we were all first learning about Cherif's penchant for filming just about anything that moved, as many of our tummies creaked through the evening with only deli-coco and hydration fluid as 'nourishment', as a flash of darkness marked the beginning of a century and a tropicalized stay in Mali, as a dee-jay interrupted songs with Bamanan commentary and played Naughty by Nature for us, Claire, Lanceni and Cherif all laugh at the digitized antics of people on the dance floor.
