Journal Entry 1-2-00 (at the village): They're doing so much to make us feel welcome, I hope that we're giving at least something back. We brought the gifts with us and we've been teaching and playing with the children. They love bubbles and right now we have about thirty of them playing "Tangoba, tangoba, shè" (Duck duck chicken...they don't have geese here!).

This is a picture of one of the markets in Mopti that we visited on our week long exursion north. The markets in Mali were wonderful: vibrant, busy, chaotic, and very social. They were some of the best places to see, meet, interact with people and get a feel for "the real Mali" (The stuff they sold was great too...fresh fruit and vegatables, jewelery, cloth and local art)

I had actually wanted to get a picture of the amazing masks and pottery, but the moment I took my camera out, these kids jumped in front and started posing. They're probably used to toubabs wanting to take pictures of them. They are pretty adorable though, so I don't mind.
Here is a picture of the three cutest children in Bamako, if not Mali. Bala (10), Mariam (8) and Mohammed (5). This photo was taken the first night I moved into my home. They were "helping" me unpack, at least until they discovered my walkman which eventually had to be hidden for its own protection.
