| My host father’s job for the UN Development
Program was to conduct a review of aid in Mali. The project was sponsored by the Sahel
Club, a private organization based in Paris that has been bringing together development
actors from the North and South in an effort to share information and improve the way aid
works. He was responsible for examining where the money comes from, where it goes, how it
is used, and how effective the aid is to the community and to the country as a whole. He
told me the basic question he was asking was: How does this mysterious and complex system
that we call development really work, and how much good does it really do? |
